Troll update

Here's that troll pic I've slowly been working on during my livestreams.
Thinking about cropping in and darkening out a lot of the background details.

Thought it would be fun to post a bunch of my creatures. Which are your favorites? Which are your least favorites? I put boll deevil at the bottom followed by cerberus. My portfolio probably consists of too many of these but I have a hard time ranking these.

So it's famine at the moment so I've been running down my mental checklist of ADs to contact and I remembered something insane I used to do. Makes me laugh now.

Seven years ago I had an excel spreadsheet that had nearly every company listed on RPGnow plus some others. Column 1:Company name. Column 2: AD's e-mail. Column 3:subject matter and style. Column 4: Estimated pay range Column 5: date portfolio was sent. Column 6: Response or feedback
We're talking a hundred companies probably. Can't believe I spent that much time just to be organized but that was me hunting down my first jobs and I was tenacious.

Now a days I just collect everybody's business cards at the conventions and then write the same notes on the back. Still, as I look through my stack of cards, I kind of wish I still had that database.

Sketch nights

Here are a bunch of sketches from Tuesday nights. By the way, I'm currently available for work.

Troll pic

So doing this as a traditional painting sure didn't last long. An hour in and I just couldn't see the point in spending so much extra time on it because I wanted it in oils.
So I switched to working on it digitally. Here's how it's looking so far. May crop out the troll's legs so that we're closer to the action. Plus the legs are boring. Then I'd probably scoot the far dwarf up on the picture plane. Probably kill the saturation on the background blue a bit. If I keep the legs, I think I'd add some mist and/or some standing water around his feet. Not sure about the water dripping from the ceiling. Like the idea but not the current placement. Maybe it'd be neat landing on the figures some so we get some nice splash effects.

There's a website called Kickstarter that works as a third party for accepting donations towards projects. I heard about them a couple of weeks ago but blew it off as being useless for me. I can't get anybody to donate to me currently and at the moment I'm not wanting to do a graphic novel or anything. Now I'm considering setting up something on there so that people can donate to send me to next years Illustration Master Class. Backers of various amounts would get the sketches or paintings created there. Not sure if Kickstarter would allow it since the funding isn't for creating a product. Still might be worth a try because I don't know if I'd ever spend that much money myself.

I know a lot my watchers probably just found out about Kickstarter through Jon or Rick. Have you come up with any clever ideas for this site?

Another potential project for Kickstarter is an instructional book idea I've had kicking around that I've been meaning to make some sample pages of and propose to Impact books. Don't worry, it's not about technical stuff but rather it's about idea generation and creativity. From dealing with the children's book though, I'm not sure I'd want to publish on my own or print a ton of copies and have selling them become my job.

I've made a couple of nice pieces here recently that I thought I'd be able to show in November but the card set that precedes it has been pushed back to 2011 so I won't be able to show it probably until 2nd quarter 2011. Pretty bummed about that. If those pieces aren't good enough for my portfolio by the time that rolls around, I'll be in awesome shape though so no complaints I guess.

Client delays mean I'll be working on a personal oil painting today!

Otyugh bug

Had an awesome weekend! Started to recover from being sick for one but I also took a lot of time to thumbnail for personal pieces. Came up with about thirteen illustrations I want to make. Plus I started revising a pic that's under NDA and will be slathering the dwarves VS troll pic with matte medium this week. Not sure when I'll get around to that oil painting though. Oh yeah, this dying otyugh was one of the sketches. Not sure I'll pursue it though. There was another sketch with a similar theme and I just thought I'd try to translate that sketch to having a D&D critter in it so that it can be another pieces targeting D&D.

Also, I'm working on some card art and I think they're coming along super well. The average quality of my art is really starting to go up. I'll thank making reference for the improvement. I also thought for these most recent pieces that I'd try out the Gamut Mask. I thought the palettes generated from it would lead to desaturated or low contrast images but so far I think the images may be popping more than my previous images. Surprised by that.
